The US embargo itself has clearly demonstrated that it didn’t do anything to accomplish its goal: to bring down the Castro regime. On the contrary, the embargo has been a very useful tool for the regime to perpetuate its existence and justify all the hardships that the Cuban people had to go through all these years. Yet this issue was not brought up in this debate. The Cuban exile in the US is a strong supporter of this embargo and, given its strong capacity to back (or derail) political leaders, they succeeded in virtually taking this topic off any political debate.
