One thing to add: If I recall correctly, Che Guevara witnessed the US-sponsored invasion that ousted Arbenz and used the experience to advise Castro on how not to let it happen to him. Arbenz was, as Steven notes, popularly elected. In fact, he won more than 65% of the vote in one of the very few free elections the country has ever had. Excellent summary of a sad situation.
