Mack Wins 100, Charles has Career Day
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the AP: (17) Texas 28, Nebraska 25:

Jamaal Charles ran for a career-high 290 yards, 216 and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and carried No. 17 Texas to a 28-25 win over Nebraska on Saturday, sending the Cornhuskers to their fourth straight loss.

[…]

For Texas coach Mack Brown, the win was a milestone — No. 100 with the Longhorns.

Good deal. Due to the exigencies of local coverage, ABC didn’t show the game here and while I listened to over half the game on Satellite radio (sadly, the Nebraska broadcast, as UT signed a deal with XM this season), I missed the end. I really didn’t think we were going to pull it out.

Another Longhorn in Trouble
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the AP: Longhorns Hit With 6th Arrest Since June

Texas freshman running back James Henry has been charged with two felony counts of obstruction and tampering with evidence, making him the sixth Longhorns player arrested since June.

Henry, arrested Monday, is accused of beating up one of the victims of a July home invasion that allegedly involved two other players, Andre Jones and Robert Joseph.

What is going on? Brown has been at Texas for ten years, and while there have been players in trouble before, never like this.

Give brown credit, he has publicly taken responsibility:

“When someone is accused of trouble or has trouble, it is devastating to me personally,” he said. “It’s really all on me. It’s on me alone. I’m responsible for making all the final decisions at the football office at the University of Texas. It’s obvious I need to be more accountable and do a better job.”

[…]

“I’ve got to go back and look at everything I’m doing. Twenty-three years as a head coach, I’ve dealt with more in six months than I have in 23 years,” he said.

Immediately after the UCF escape, mack Brown was asked what he learned about his Texas team today.

His response:

I know we shouldn’t open up stadiums for anybody else.

Indeed.

UT WR Pittman Suspended
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the DMN’s College Sports Blog: Texas suspends WR Pittman for three games

Texas has suspended senior receiver Billy Pittman for the first three games of the 2024 season as a result of disciplinary action taken by the university.

Pittman was the third leading receiver last season.

Add this to the fact that Limas Sweed is still recovering from his injury, and the WR corps is a tad depleted going into the season opener.

Jody Conradt Resigns
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the FWST: Conradt resigns as Texas coach

Texas women’s basketball coach Jody Conradt resigned Monday after her team for the second straight season failed to reach the NCAA tournament.

Conradt is the second winningest coach in Division I college basketball, behind only Tennessee women’s coach Pat Summit.

Conradt got her 900th last Tuesday in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament. She had what some considered to be the nation’s top recruiting class this season, but injuries, inexperience and immaturity hurt the Longhorns.

Conradt is 900-306 in 38 seasons: four at Sam Houston State, three at UT-Arlington and 31 at Texas.

While I am not a big followers of women’s basketball, I know enough to know that Conradt has had an impressive career and has been a fixture at Texas for some time–31 years at one place is an amazing run.

In any event, a big Hook’Em to her.

The Austin American-Statesman has a more extensive piece (Conradt resigning as Texas coach), which includes the following::

Conradt, 65, said she started thinking about retiring earlier in this season. Texas in one stretch lost five games in a row.

“I’m not going to take another coaching job,” she said.

Longhorns Look to Fix Pass D
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the AP:  Longhorns start spring drills with gaps to fill:

Coming off a disappointing 10-3 season, Texas begins spring practice Friday trying to shore up a defense that gave up too many big plays as the Longhorns fell to third in the Big 12.

Texas lost five starters — three defensive backs and two pass rushing ends — from a unit that ranked among the best in the country against the run but among the worst against the pass.

There is little doubt that the defense last year was not as good as it needed to be, especially in big games against the pass.

Hopefully Mack can figure it out, but there it is an uphill battle, as we lost Gene Chizik (one of the co-defcoords) and a number of starters, all of whom will likely be on NFL rosters come the Fall (indeed, I would expect that Safety Michael Griffin and Cornerback Aaron Ross will go in the first round).

Coach Mack Brown hired a new defensive co-coordinator, Larry Mac Duff, to work with longtime assistant Duane Akina. They will try to break in a talented but inexperienced group of new starters.

Although Mac Duff will be the third co-coordinator on Brown’s staff in four years, he and Akina were assistants together at Arizona and scripted the Wildcats’ dominating “Desert Swarm” defenses.

The Longhorns lost Thorpe Award winner Aaron Ross and Tarell Brown at cornerback and Michael Griffin at safety. That leaves only Griffin’s brother, Michael, as a returning starter at strong safety. Brown has stockpiled talented recruits at defensive back in recent years but is waiting to see what they can do on the field.

Major Applewhite to Coach Alabama’s QBs
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the Huntsville Times: Saban adds trio to coaching staff:

Not included among the latest announcements was Major Applewhite, the offensive coordinator at Rice. Applewhite has accepted an offer from Saban to coach quarterbacks, according to a Friday report in the Houston Chronicle.

Here’s the Houston Chronicle story which notes that Applewhite was named after Crimson Tide star Major Oglivie.

One guesses that Applewhite has a long and successful coaching career ahead of him if his tenure as Rice’s OC is to be a guide (not to mention his clear mental grasp of the game when he was Texas’ QB).

Congrats to Colt
By Steven L. Taylor

Via SI.com: McCoy ties freshman record; Texas takes Alamo

Colt McCoy was supposed be a placeholder for Texas at quarterback this season. Now, he’s a record holder.

The redshirt freshman who replaced Vince Young turned in another gritty performance with two touchdown passes to rally the No. 18 Longhorns to a 26-24 victory Saturday over Iowa in the Alamo Bowl.

[…]

McCoy finished 26-for-40 for 308 yards. His 29 touchdown passes this season tied the NCAA freshman record set by Nevada’s David Neill in 1998.

Indeed, McCoy has been a very pleasant surprise this year. His impact is underscored by the fact that Texas’ two loses this season came in games where McCoy was hurt and was unable to play the entire games in question.
