Beckham Coming to the US
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the AP: David Beckham to play for L.A. Galaxy.

I am no fan of soccer (although as a Latin Americanist, I have tried to be interested), but even I know that this is huge news. David Beckham is probably the second most well-known footballer after Pele. If anything, he is a true global superstar. I am quite surprised that a) he is willing to play in the MLS, which has to be like Peyton Manning going to NFL Europe (or maybe Arena FB), and b) that a team in the US has the money to pay him.

  1. Maybe its like Manning going to NFL Europe, but perhaps when he’s at the end of his career . . . and really doesn’t have the skill to keep up in the NFL. At least, that’s what I hear about Beckam. However, this is big news nonetheless.

I heard that the US teams tweaked the salary cap so that one player’s salary is not counted against it for just this kind of circumstance - the ability to sign one international superstar per team.
