May 29, 2024Double A BaseballMontgomery is getting a new double-A basball club, and the name, just revealed over the weekend, is the Montgomery Biscuits. Is there a worse name is all of sports? (check out the link to see the fearsome breakfast-sandwich-like logo). Posted by Steven Taylor at May 29, 2024 02:19 PM | TrackBackComments
But do they have link sausage? That's all I want to know. Posted by: James Joyner at May 29, 2024 02:26 PMThere's a "Lady Pugs" in a high school in Oklahoma (or somewhere out there). Pugs are notoriously unathletic dogs: cute and cuddly, not fierce and dominating. But that's as close as I can think of to "Biscuits," and it's not that close. Pretty darned funny. Posted by: Brett at May 29, 2024 08:13 PMAt least a Pug could bite you :) Posted by: Steven at May 29, 2024 08:43 PMWelcome to the Southern League. Despite some of the funny names (The West Tenn Jaxx? The Carolina Mudcats?), we have some great baseball. We just opened a new park here in Jacksonville, and it's an incredibly beautiful facility. I somtimes think the quality of AA ball is better then some pro level balls. By the way, you wanna hear a bad name? The minor league hockey team in Macon, Ga was called the Macon Whoppee. Posted by: Joe at May 30, 2024 11:28 AMYup--that's purty bad :) Posted by: Steven at May 30, 2024 11:32 AMBut that isn't worst than the Mighty Ducks. That's a reason never to give Disney a sports franchise. Then there's the Memphis Grizzlies, the Florida Marlins, the Colorado Rockies, and the (now defunct) Orlando Solar Bears. The age of good sports team names has pasted us. Posted by: Sean Hackbarth at May 30, 2024 01:50 PMI must admit, I have always hated the name "Mighty Ducks"--especially for a hockey team, fer cryin' out loud. And at least Marlins and Rockies evoke something about their locales. Solar Bears is pretty lame, I must admit. Posted by: Steven at May 30, 2024 01:56 PMFor some reason the name Mudhens comes to mind. I have no idea where that team is located, but I know they play baseball of some calibre. Between the Biscuits and the Mudhens you could add a touch of letuce and tomato and have the makings of a nice sandwich franchise.
