  • Update: Bias in Entertainment

Here’s the updated list of liberals as good guys and conservatives as bad guys movie/tv list. I found the name of one of the Senator-based shows, the James Garner Supreme Court show and have added another Supreme Court-based show. Also, Lance John Romanoff suggested two additions:

  • The American President

  • The West Wing

  • Dave

  • Citizen Baines (the James Cromwell ex-Senator show)

  • The other Senator show I cannot find the name of.

  • First Monday (the James Garner SC show)

  • The Court—the protagonist of the show, played by Sally Fields, was described as a “centrist” who, however, has “progressive leanings.” I never saw the show, so do not know how the conservatives were portrayed.

The following were suggested by Lance Jonn Romanoff:

  • Bulworth

  • The Contender

Still no suggestions for a cons as good guys, libs as bad guy example.

While not the "conservative = good guy; liberal = bad guy" formula you are looking for, I have found that the TV show "Law and Order" has had a quite balanced approach to legal issues over the years. They've wrestled with the death penalty, yet the DA has pursued it, and it was handled in an intelligent way. The current assistant seems to have a conservative/libertarian streak, particularly in the first season she was on. And currently, they have Fred Thompson -- former TN Senator -- as the DA and he has bits of conservative wisdom here and there. The nice thing about "Law and Order" and why it has remained a top show for years and years, is that it focuses on the drama of the issues without getting to heavy-handed preachy. They also often show criminals as the scum they are, rather than as simple "victims" of society.
"Law & Order: SVU" also does this fairly well...and Richard Belzer and Ice T make a great combo in their supporting roles!

What about that show with Craig T. Nelson "The District"?

The District is a fine show, although it may now have ended. (I missed the season/series finale.) The lede characters are clearly fairly liberal, although they're also cops and, in Nelson's character's case, a Vietnam vet.

There was also that John Ritter-Marky Post-Billy Bob Thornton show (Hearts Afire?) a few years back. I don't remember all that much about it, but they were political consultants or something.

Good point on Law & Order--I had thought of it, and you are right-there is pretty good balance there over the years.

I have never seen "The District"--so, are the cons casted in abad light, or is it just that the main characters are libs?

Craig Nelson comes off as more conservative in a "Dirty Harry" sort of law-and-order way. Maybe I"m not seeing the clear liberal bias in his character. To me, he would be a poster boy for compassionate conservatism. Fighting crime AND caring about people.
