September 08, 2024Davis UnpluggedOne the one hand, if this is the best he's got, he's still toast: Talking to a voter, Davis reportedly said "you shouldn't be Governor unless you can pronounce the name of the State." On the other, can one imagine if the person saying this was a Republican and the guy with the accent was a Democrat? On the third hand, it is vaguely amusing (and Davis did say it was a joke). On the fourth hand, it somehow seems to fit into the whole Recall Campaign ambiance. Source: 29 Days & Counting to the Historic Recall Election UPDATE: Based on Matthew's comment, I went looking for more info: Whipped into an anti-Schwarzenegger frenzy at the picnic, one crowd member screamed, "He's a foreigner!" as Davis criticized Schwarzenegger, who hopes to take over his seat in the Oct. 7 recall election. But it's okay to placate a xenophobe in the audience, because after all, Arnie's a White Austrian-American. Yeesh. Source: Report: Davis Slams Schwarzenegger's Accent And the original SacBee story: Governor takes dig at accent and today's follow-up: Davis says he was 'just joking' about Schwarzenegger's pronunciation. Actually, Davis wasn't just talking to a voter. He was talking to a man who screamed "He's a foreigner!" (about Schwarzenegger) during a pro-Davis union rally. That man came up to Davis and apologized for possibly embarassing the governor with his outburst, and the governor made that "joke" to reassure him. So the real parallel would be having a Republican crack a joke like that after someone they were talking to shouted a xenophobic or racist catcall about their opponent.
