The Tactical Genius of the Democratic Party

Surely doing this: Democrats Demand Bush Pull TV Ad Attacking Critics of Iraq Policy means that far more attention will be given to this ad than otherwise would have been the case. Further, it will mean many free airings of at least part of the commercial, as was the case on MTP yesterday.

Yes, the Dems are campaignin' geniuses.

It's always a double-edged sword in politics - criticizing a statement or ad by the opponent. If you don't criticize it, people will implicitly assume that it was correct. If you do, it gets free air time.

Seems like it's generated a tremendous amount of negative press for the ad. A lot of people will now have the frame of the democrats in mind when the see it.

Doesn't seem like a loser strategy to me. . .

John,

Set aside the content of the ad for a minute, and think of it this way: Group X has made it possible for Group Y to get a lot of free publicity. Does this sound like a good move?

And really I don't think it has generated negative coverage, per se. Now, granted, Democratic commentators have spun it that way, but ultimately, the net effect is more people seeing the commercial than otherwise would have, and at no expense to the RNC.

They gave the RNC a few million dollars in free media. And they really did it the wrong way to boot.

LET'S REVIEW:

The ad hit at the very heart of one of the major complaints about Dems today. Mostly that they have no ideas of their own they are just against Bush even if he is doing the right thing. (ie war on terror)

So what do the Dems do when the RNC says they have no ideas and just whine about Bush???

The Dems reply by whining about Bush. (That's gonna be effective.)

Then in a stoke of incredible good luck for the Republicans, the Dems don't just "call" for him to remove the ads, they "DEMAND" he remove them.

Ya got 9 dwarfs whose biggest collective problem is that they are perceived to be weak and Bush is perceived to be strong. So they "DEMAND" Bush do something to which the simply reply is, "NO." They can "demand" all they want, they don't have any power. (Yup, having the President ignore you will surely make everyone respect you!)

And the icing on the cake is the Dems took a $100,000 regional buy and made it a national story.

Anyone who thinks the Dems helped themselves here is totally delusional.
