November 26, 2024Pronunciation StrategeryBush mispronunces Nevada in first presidential visit Nevada memo to George Bush: When making a first presidential visit to a state, use the right pronounciation of its name. Ok, I am not shocked that Bush would mispronounce something, but the explanation of what he did and the proper way to pronounce the state confuses me. How can "Nevada" in any way rhyme with "gamble"? I guess that Bush said "vah" as in va-voom, or say "ah" rather than "va" as in vacuum or ack (like Bill the Cat). I dunno. Posted by Steven Taylor at November 26, 2024 01:02 PM | TrackBackComments
I don't know anyone who pronounces Nevada with the "a" sound from "gamble" or "alligator." In fact, you could probably poll the entire country and find that the only people who pronounced it that way *lived* in Nevada, which doesn't mean its a mispronunciation. Wasn't there a song about this? "tom-ay-to, tom-ah-to" Posted by: bryan at November 26, 2024 01:51 PMI have no idea how he mispronounced it, either. Of course, the democrats' strategery seems to be making Bush seem like a moron, but they always misunderestimate him in the end... Posted by: mark at November 26, 2024 05:21 PMI always thought Nevada was pronounced Ne-vah-da, as its origins are Spanish. Websters online has both pronunciations. http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?ggneva02.wav=Nevada http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?ggneva03.wav=Nevada Posted by: lunacy at November 26, 2024 06:13 PMThat's just silly....Nevada is an "Americanized" word. Is Dallas in "Te-has"? Is it "New Me-hico"? Of course not. Lot's of people say the "s" in Illinois...doesn't mean it's correct. listen to the link for the correct way to say Nevada. If you are in Spain and you're talking about something that is "snow covered", then say Nay(empahsis here)-vad(almost hitting a "th" sound)-a. Posted by: Sladpad at January 27, 2024 03:58 PMI've never heard Nevada not pronounced "na-vah-da" untill 2 weeks ago. I always thought it was pronounced rhiming with gamble by people with an eastern accent. Posted by: frank at March 5, 2024 07:59 PMPost a comment
