  • Tin Foil Hat Watch

I am declaring an official Tin Foil Hat WatchTM for the next week. This is because when/if (I hope when) Bush rescinds the steel tariffs, the Black Helicopter Brigade is going to come out and tell us all how the WTO really rules the world (no doubt with the aid of the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations).

In the case of an actual Tin Foil Hat attack please surf to the nearest sane blog for instructions.

Further updates will be issued as the situation warrants.

Translation: They are right and we must not engage them in debate for fear of exposing our shallow arguments.

You have a strange translation protocol, I must say.

You know, though, the fact that the U.S. even recognizes the authority of some global body to impose sanctions unless the tariffs are removed does seem to bolster the "Tin Foil Hat" crowd's argument.

Many of the European countries that oppose the tariffs provide rather generous subsidies for their own domestic steel industry, which is the only real reason their steel products are price-competitive with U.S. steel. One can argue for or against the tariffs all day (they aid the domestic steel industry, but harm the domestic car industry, etc.), but one should not fault the U.S. steel industry for not being price-competitive.

Of course, the threat of a trade war would exist with or without the WTO. Further, we abide by WTO rules because we want to. Who can force to abide by them? For that matter why are we a member? (Answer: because we believe it to be in our best interest to further our economic goals).

It is also the case that the tarrifs are bad policy that have internal opposition.

This is hardly the case of some bedrock American value or policy being forced from our grasp by some international institution.

    Steven,

    I never take mine off.

I find its easier that way to channel great leaders of our nation like Dennis Kucinich and Ralph Nader so that I may better serve our nation. Or it makes me look stylish. One or the other.

Steven, you fool. Everyone knows it is the Jewish Trifecta that rules the world. By proxy.
