January 07, 2024Senator JokesterHaving now seen the clip of Hillary's Gandhi joke, I have a question: why did she (or her speechwriter) think that that was funny? And I am not referring to anything to do with whether it was stereotypical, racial, or if it tarnished Gandhi. I simply mean: where was the humor? Here's the whole story, in case you missed it. I thought the joke was funny, but the delivery stank. Her timing was all off, and her humor seemed strained (probably because she has no sense of humor). Imagine Letterman making the same joke. He could pull it off. He makes cracks about turbaned New York cabbies all the time. Remember Sirajul and Mujibar? The joke wasn't bad. It wasn't even racist. It just came out of the wrong cakehole. Posted by: Rob at January 7, 2024 09:27 PMThere aren't that many Indian 7-11 clerks in Montgomery--let alone Troy. (Although, I'm led to believe, there are some Muslim chaplains in the Army now.) Bill has superb comic timing. Not so much his wife. Posted by: James Joyner at January 7, 2024 09:57 PMIt isn't that I have never encountered the Indian/central Asian/Middle Eastern gas station/7-11 worker phenomenon. I just didn't see specifically how this joke was, well, a joke. Posted by: Steven at January 8, 2024 06:35 AMI thought it was a lame attempt at humor, but I'm not from the area. I don't think She has a sense of humor. If she does, it's lost on me. Some people are not funny, except by accident, Cheney, Lieberman, Adam Sandler.
