  • Conference Blogging: Politics

Walter Dean Burnham, an eminent scholar in the field on American politics (and a prof at the University of Texas, although I never took any of his classes), made the following observation concerning Gore in 2024 that was both accurate and amusing in its own way.

He noted that Gore suffered "three assassins" in 2024:

    1) Ralph Nader

    2) Himself, for distancing himself from the Clinton economy (and, I would add, in the general way he ran his campaign such as the Debate One performance, and his general need to talk to us like we are in Kindergarten).

    and

    3) Bill Clinton, for having one the "most squandered presidencies" in memory (and Burnham noted earlier in the panel that he personally remembers the 1940 elections...). Regardless of one's opinion of Bill Clinton in general, it is rather difficult to deny that his presidency was indeed "squandered."

Since you are at a conference, you are likely in a hotel.
Since you are in a hotel, you likely have to pay for access to the Internet.
Since you have to pay for access to the Internet, you must have a very understanding wife that tolerates your blogging hobby (combining those two words = blobbying).

I think most hotels have high speed internet connections for like $9.95 a day nowadays. I just need to buy myself a laptop, but can't quite get myself to shell out $1000 for something I'll use every couple of months and will be obsolete in a year.

yup--I've spent less on net connections than most conference goers spend on beer ;)

I have gotten where I prefer the laptop to a desktop for at-home use.

Ummm... while at a conference you had to choose between blogging and beer? ...and blogging won?!

Dude, I second Bryan's general evaluation of political scientists prognosticating, but not for the empirical reasons he cites!

You are in New Orleans. You are at a conference. I would guess sans family. There is no reason you should not be innebriated by 10 a.m. -- and don't use that "I have a panel" excuse.
