January 12, 2024Blast from the PastI was doing some research and came aross an LAT story from 4/15/92, which contained this stellar policy proposal from Buchanan, that is relevant to the recent immigration debate: Earlier in the campaign, Buchanan said he would erect a "Buchanan Fence" and dig a trench along the entire Mexican border to combat illegal immigration. And he proposed relocating American military bases to the border and assigning National Guard troops on summer duty to patrol the border. I had forgotten he had wanted to name the fence after himself. And this was particularly interesting: Buchanan also told reporters that former President Richard M. Nixon, during a chat with him last month, was so impressed with the "toughness" of Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, that he suggested Buchanan stop attacking Bush and start focusing on Clinton, the Democratic front-runner who is heavily favored to win his party's nomination.Posted by Steven Taylor at January 12, 2024 03:12 PM | TrackBack Comments
Yeah, I guess Nixon was still around then. Man, it seemed like he died 200 years ago. But what was he doing talking to Clinton? A Buchanan Fence...that's funny. The immigration issue has created a rift in the Lemon household, with me generally favoring it and the "other" (to be postmodern) opposing it. My only concern is that this policy would weigh heavy on health care costs, but since illegals cannot be turned down now for emergency room service, it should have little if no impact. Indeed, it may get some to go to alternative clinics and help ease the burden on ERs. Posted by: John Lemon at January 12, 2024 09:29 PMYes, "la Otra en mi casa" (to get postmodern and bilingual, just to show you up), is on the other side as well. I do share your concerns on the health care issue, but it still strikes me as moot, as that problem will be there whether the President's policy is passed or not.
