  • Today's List: SOTU Lines

Today's List has been on semi-hiatus, but here is a list to file under "current events": My Top Five Favorite Lines from the State of the Union Address That Would Make Great Sound Bites:

    5. "These numbers confirm that the American people are using their money far better than government would have -- and you were right to return it." [What about all the spending?-Ed. I can still like the line, can't I? Plus, it is a good bite]

    4. "Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives." [I liked this one for the general senitment, as much as the specific issue on the table].

    3. "[I]t is mistaken, and condescending, to assume that whole cultures and great religions are incompatible with liberty and self-government."

    2. "For all who love freedom and peace, the world without Saddam Hussein's regime is a better and safer place."

    1. "America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our country."

To be fair, our friends on the other side of the aisle (if they're worth their salt) should be able to do something with:

"WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION ... program ... uh ... related .. activities."

One of the best lines (I thought) was how we act unilaterally does not really make sense to the people of Britian, Australia, Spain, etc.

Judging by the applause meter, there was something for everyone in President Bush's SOTU speech.

"Key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year. (Applause.) The terrorist threat will not expire on that schedule. (Applause.) Our law enforcement needs this vital legislation to protect our citizens. You need to renew the Patriot Act. (Applause.)"

Who was applauding the statement that the terrorist threat will not expire next year? I want names!

I think the 'permission slip' line is the killer phrase from the entire address. It boils down the entire refutation of the objection to the U.S. engaging in Unilateral action in Iraq to two words. It is bumper sticker wisdom, and that is what wins political arguments.

When the Bush campaign combines that line with 'mass graves' and 'torture chambers', the Democrat opponents have to wince.
