  • More Evidence that the FMA is Unlikley to be Formally Proposed

Some in G.O.P. Cool to Gay Marriage Ban

Despite President Bush's endorsement of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, some Congressional Republicans are cool to the idea and say they want to move more deliberately than the White House.

The amendment proposal does enjoy broad support among many Republicans in the House and Senate. But the wariness among others is complicating the already difficult task of moving a constitutional change through the House and Senate.

This is a very interesting news article not for what it says, but what it doesn't say. Notice that the NYT went to find Republicans against the FMA (which it is now being called, I guess). They did not go and feature Democrats that are for it. Maybe there aren't any. But John Kerry said he is against gay marriage, why don't they ask him straight out and tell him to expound on his position rather than turning the subject to steel mills that closed during the Carter Administration.

And there is a story on MSNBC.com now that talks about how the Log Cabin Republicans are upset. Basically the trope here is that there are massive defections from the GOP because of this issue. It is an informational cascade and everyone should join in.

Now, let's hear some stories about Dems not happy with what is going on in MA or SF. (There was one by Barney Frank and a statement by Barb Boxer, I will grant you that.)

The way this story has been flipped and being reported -- i.e., the GOP started this fight -- is just unreal! I have never seen spin so blatan like this before.

The lead story on one of the network radio newscasts yesterday was how the President's proposal will cost him votes as well.

And yes, the line that Bush started this is a bit remarkable.

According to this tally, Zell Miller is the only Democrat for it. Five Republicans are against.

This tally has eight Republicans against it, but doesn't provide sources.

Kerry has said he is for the amendment in his own state, so long as it allows civil unions, but not the federal one because it should be left to the states.
