A) I don't find AlterNet to be the most credible of sources. AlterNet strikes me, based on looking at the bios of the people who run it, a leftist version of the American Spectator at the height of its anti-Clinton paranoia

B) I am dubious of the CIA drug dealing tales, although I am not one to say such things are impossible.

C) If you have read previous things I have written, you would find that the underlying point that I build from is that the War on Drugs is a failure, and that the market forces created by prohibition are what fuel the ability of terrorists to fund their activities.

D) And your point would be?

My point is that you can't say that the War on Drugs is linked to the War on Terror just because some terrorists sell drugs. There are two main reasons: First, terrorists also own restaurants and cell phone shops. Does that mean those enterprises should be shut down too? Second, we (meaning the US government) ALLOW people to grow poppies in Afghanistan. That means the heroin problem is in part our OWN fault.

I agree that Alternet isn't the greatest source. That's called an ad hom. Conceded. The argument is still true. I also agree that it's possible that the CIA sells drugs, but it's most likely that they just look the other way while sketchy "associates" do it for them. Finally, I'm glad you agree that the War on Drugs is a failure. Good to know.

To question a source is not ad hominem. Ad hominem is attacking a person, not their arguments. If a source is clearly ideologically slanted, then it is reasonable to questions the conclusions reached. Hardly ad hominem.

And I hate to break it to you, but there is a clear linakge between th drug trade and political violence: it is currently one of the best sources of relatively easily aquired cash in huge sums. It is clear, for example, that guerrillas in Colombia fund their activities in large part from drug trafficking and related activities. Further, the Taliban generated money from the heroin trade in Afghanistan.

And, I would note, this is a topic in which I have some expertise, although chiefly in regards to the Western Hemisphere. I teach a graduate seminar on drug politics in the Americas and am have started work on a book on the subject.

Trust me: revenues generated by ilicit narcotic sales most certainly help fuel terrorism.
