  • Maybe Network TV Sitcoms are Dead After All...

NBC Plans to Add Five New Series for Fall

The "Frasier" time slot at 9 p.m. Tuesday will be filled with an animated comedy, "Father of the Pride," about the lions that perform in Siegfried and Roy's Las Vegas show.

This sounds more like one of those Scooby Doo celebrity match-up cartoons (like Scooby Doo meets Batman) than it does a primetime show on a major broadcast network.

Will the lions be mauling anyone in the show? Just wondering about the "reality TV" angle.

I don't mean to make light of the tragic accident that happened last year. Just making fun of CBS.

or NBC as the case may be.

No TV sitcoms are alive and well. As of this moment, I looked at CNN.com and they don't even have listed the killing of the head Iraq governing council, the discovery of sarin and mustard gas, or anything on MA gay marriage.

However, they do have a report on hurricanes and Canadian frozen pizza.

If you really are obsessed about TV, you should be reading The Futon Critic (http://www.thefutoncritic.com/) and Zap2It (http://www.zap2it.com/).

I must say I hardly ever watch the Peacock, I must be rather atypical for someone my age who watches as much TV as I do... (hmm... looks like the only thing I watch with any regularity on NBC is The West Wing).

Now to demonstrate that I am obsessed with television, I've read through most of the recent news items on The Futon Critic. "Joey", the "Friends" spinoff supposedly has been doing well with test audiences, and "Scrubs" has been doing amazingly well--keeping nearly all ("99%") of the audience from "Frasier" which aired in the time slot before it. So I'd say that sitcoms are far from dead, even on NBC.

The only prime-time NBC show I watch (although have semi-gotten out of the habit is ER) and on the only CBS show I watch is "Eveybody Loves Raymond". And the only time ABC has gotten my attention in years is "Monday Night Football."
