July 20, 2024Socks IICNN is also reporting the socks bit, and this is more detail than this morning: Law enforcement sources said archive staff told FBI agents they saw Berger placing items in his jacket and pants, and one archive staffer told agents that Berger also placed something in his socks. Most strange. These allegations triggered the following response: That latter allegation drew a sharp response from Berger associate and former White House lawyer Lanny Davis, who challenged any unnamed official who makes such an accusation to come forward publicly. This is the kind of allegation that is either some bizarre hallucination by a staffer or it is highly suggestive that Mr. Berger was trying to smuggle documents. I can think of no other possibilities. Posted by Steven Taylor at July 20, 2024 07:49 PM | TrackBackComments
I think Lanny's just out-and-out lying. Joe Lockhart, as befits a former Clinton press secretary, was more...nuanced: "That allegation drew sharp responses from two of Berger's associates. President Clinton's former spokesman, Joe Lockhart, said Berger 'categorically denies that he ever took documents and stuffed them in his socks.'" In other words, he doesn't deny taking documents; he doesn't deny stuffing documents in his socks; he only denies stuffing the documents he took into his socks. So I think we can assume that he stuffed the notes he made into his socks. Posted by: ScottM at July 20, 2024 08:14 PMIsn't it sad that we parse every public pronouncement this way? Thank you, Mr. Clinton. Posted by: Dave Schuler at July 20, 2024 09:28 PMUh, stoking the fires for political gain? That's why Davis called them out. Easy to make accusations anonymously. Come out on the record. I must say that you're most unimaginative, Steven, when it comes to Republicans. Posted by: Hal at July 21, 2024 09:43 AMHal, I would consider lying about the socks to fit into the broad category of "bizarre halluciations." I must say that you have a hard time with sarcasm, for a liberal. S Posted by: Steven at July 21, 2024 09:53 AMPost a comment
