UPN Keeping 'Amish' Reality Series Under Wraps

UPN has rejected requests by congressmen and its affiliate stations to preview the controversial reality show "Amish in the City" ahead of its July 28 premiere.

"Amish" -- a reality series that chronicles a group of young Amish men and women ages 18-24 as they first encounter the modern world -- was shot secretly in a Hollywood Hills hideaway after initial news of its development provoked some outcries.

    Two reactions:

    1) Is this the definition of bad taste, or what?

    and

    2) Why in the world would a member of Congress be requesting an advancd viewing.

I've lived in Japan for (damn) going on nine years. I think Japanese TV is horrid. But everytime I return to the States for a vacation or business trip, I'm shocked at what passes for TV entertainment. Particularly in the last couple of years.

I'm pretty sure I'll be moving back to the States within the next year. I think I may be in for a real culture shock.

    Genius. Pure Genius.

Why haven't we thought of filming the Amish before? They're the perfect subject. Portray them however you want. They won't watch the show, since they don't watch TV.

Actually, it might be an interesting series. I have a feeling this is going to center on a custom the Amish have in which young people are sent out into the rest of the world for a time to experience it. The idea is that they experience the worldly world, compare it to the Amish world, and figure out which one they want to live in.

If this were conducted in a less exploitative manner, it would actually be quite educational.

    PW,

I agree, it could be an interesting sociological documentary.

However, meguesses that the UPN ain't gonna play it that way. :)

    Steven:

I would honestly enjoy a show, perhaps a la the "House" series from PBS, that tried to give us insight into how Amish handle the "rumspringa," complete with interviews with their families back in Amish country, candid assessments of how the customs of the English world conflict with the Amish kids' upbringing, and an eventual conclusion that allows us to see how each person chooses, and why.

Of course, to really cover six Amish adolescents' rumspringa would require several years of time, lots of interviews, miles of footage, and months in the editing room.

You're right, though -- UPN is unlikely to invest in that sort of effort.
