    1. Maybe it was dealing with the Foley scandal that made them decide to cut Craig loose early.

    2. I think it has to do with it being so much safer to go all-out against Craig. Idaho is tied with Wyoming as the second most reliably Republican state in the country (after Utah). In a more mixed state they might be afraid that if they go after Craig and he does run for re-election, it might hurt him in the general election. Tactically, they can knock him off in the primary if he chooses to run (Foley was post-primary) and even if they don’t Craig could still possibly win re-election as the Republican nominee against a Democrat in that state. Right now they’re in face-saving mode and that requires very public condemnations.
