And yet our super-charismatic leader was apparently naive enough to expect a different result. Unless he campaigned for two years on something he knew to be a lost cause because he thought (correctly) enough Americans would buy it.

and a state’s leader’s will always tweak the nose of a rival state’s when internal politics demands it.
