Via Reuters: Military identifies new al Qaeda leader
“We think that Abu Ayyub al-Masri is in fact, probably, Abu Hamza al-Muhajir. They are probably one and the same,” Major General William Caldwell, the spokesman for the U.S. military in Iraq, told a news conference.
He’s an Egyptian and was an aide to Zarqawi.

this kind of thing by the military does no service to the american public. It puts an face on an enemy that has more more than faces than we can even begin to imagine. The war in Iraq is being fought by many many unrelated groups with little in common other than their hatred of the west.
This kind of over-simplification got us into Iraq. Keeping up the facade just confuses the issue more.

With any luck we will find him soon and take him out. Also, after watching a little of the Iran vs. Mexico soccer match last weekend, I was shocked to see how the Mexicans and Iranians looked so much alike. That, my friends, is a very chilling wakeup call in my opinion.

Are you suggesting that because many Mexicans and many Iranians have brownish skin that that means much of anything? If so, I think you might want to rethink where you are going with that line of thinking…

What I am saying is that it would be very easy for an individual or group from the Middle East to make their way from Mexico to the US because those of Arabic and Spanish decent look very similar. This same concern has been brought up numerous times while debating the border security issue. My comments are not aimed to be racist, just an observation that has been made time and time again.

I see your point–which didn’t come out in the original post.
I will say this: having lived in Latin America and having been to Mexico, not to mention having known a good number of Middle Easterners (and, for that matter, Iranians) over the year, especially when I lived in Southern California, the degree to which Middle Easterner would easily blend into Latin America is less likely than it may seem based on casual observation.
There is also the continued fact the it would seem that the likely conduit for Islamic extremists from abroad are direct points of entry or via Canada, not Mexico.

Except that is simply a pronouncement by a member of Congress already unhappy about the President’s stance on the issue. It isn’t really evidence, but rather an assertion.
I am not saying that the scenario under discussion is impossible. Rather, I am saying it far less probable than many make it out to be.
I certainly remained convinced that there are far easier ways to attack the US than the notion of first getting integrated in Mexican society so that one could then sneak across the southern border.
