  • Iraqis Respond to The Capture

    Iraqis Surprised Saddam Didn't Fight

Saddam Hussein should have put up a fight or committed suicide, stunned Iraqis said Sunday after watching images of their fallen leader, haggard and humiliated, in American custody.

As news of his capture spread across the country, celebratory shooting erupted in Baghdad's streets, soldiers cheered and victims of his tyranny thanked the United States. Many said it marked a new beginning for Iraq.

But for some, his capture was a blow to hopes for Saddam's triumphant return, and his peaceful surrender was seen as a stain on Arab honor.

In the end, a cowardly megalomaniac who used cowardly tactics to take and hold power, cowardly tactics with his neighbors, cowardly retreat in defeat, cowardly terror in exile, and a cowardly end in a cowardly hole in the ground.

In retrospect, it's understandable why we went after Saddam first -- cowards are easier to fight and subdue than the cunning and bold (i.e. O. bin Laden).

I was trying to figure out how many times I could use the word "coward" or a derivative in a single sentence. I coulda come close... So I'll steal the line above.

    As Reynolds would say... Indeed.
