“I’m like Belichick, I misinterpreted the rules.”
By Steven L. Taylor

I must confess, I am not a TO fan, but I do find the following amusing (via the Cowboys Blog):

T.O. informed us that he was fined “a good chunk of money” for his classic touchdown celebration against the Dolphins.

Sheriff Goodell got into T.O.’s pocket for violating the sacred rule against using the ball as a prop

“I’m like Belichick,” he said. “I misinterpreted the rules.”

A good comeback, I must say.

Another Longhorn in Trouble
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the AP: Longhorns Hit With 6th Arrest Since June

Texas freshman running back James Henry has been charged with two felony counts of obstruction and tampering with evidence, making him the sixth Longhorns player arrested since June.

Henry, arrested Monday, is accused of beating up one of the victims of a July home invasion that allegedly involved two other players, Andre Jones and Robert Joseph.

What is going on? Brown has been at Texas for ten years, and while there have been players in trouble before, never like this.

Give brown credit, he has publicly taken responsibility:

“When someone is accused of trouble or has trouble, it is devastating to me personally,” he said. “It’s really all on me. It’s on me alone. I’m responsible for making all the final decisions at the football office at the University of Texas. It’s obvious I need to be more accountable and do a better job.”

[…]

“I’ve got to go back and look at everything I’m doing. Twenty-three years as a head coach, I’ve dealt with more in six months than I have in 23 years,” he said.

Cowboys Sign Tank Johnson
By Steven L. Taylor

Via the DMN: Cowboys sign suspended Tank

According to his agent, Jerrold Colton, the Cowboys signed the suspended defensive tackle to a two-year deal Tuesday – although they might have to wait until Nov. 11 at the earliest before he’s in uniform.

Johnson has at most six games left on an eight-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy even though he has been unsigned. At the time, commissioner Roger Goodell announced Johnson’s suspension, he left open the possibility of reducing it to six games, although Johnson would have to apply for early reinstatement.

The chances of Johnson’s suspension being reduced to six games could have taken a hit when he was pulled over by Gilbert, Ariz., police for driving while impaired in June, although the charges were eventually dropped. The Bears released Johnson three days after the incident.

Not too much of a surprise. One wonders if the fact that Dallas play Chicago this week wasn’t part of the rationale (although given the Johnson wasn’t in camp and the Bears have a new DefCoord, one wonders how much he can tell the team).

I have mixed feelings on the signing, so we’ll see how he behaves.

Romo v. Rex
By Steven L. Taylor

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Mike Mulligan considers the starting QBs of the Bears and Boys: Gross miscalculation, indeed

The numbers are decidedly in Romo’s favor:

In leading the Cowboys to a 2-0 record, Romo has produced a passer rating of 119.3 — better than any two-game starter but the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady. He has completed 29 of 53 passes for 531 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. Romo is averaging 10 yards per pass and has 10 completions of 20 yards or more. He has been sacked twice.

Grossman ranks 32nd in passer rating at 55.1. He has completed 32 of 57 passes for 305 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions. His longest completion is 24 yards, and he has been sacked six times.

Quite the contrast, especially since Grossman was a #1 pick and Romo an undrafted FA.

Of course, Chicago wasn’t the only team who wishes they had picked Romo in ‘03:

Grossman, the fourth quarterback taken in 2024 behind Carson Palmer, Byron Leftwich and Kyle Boller, was selected 22nd overall.

Certainly the Bengals are happy with Palmer, but clearly the Ravens would be better off with Romo than Boller and Leftwich is out there trying to find a job.

Indeed, it is ironic that the two top-rater passers in the league, Brady then Romo, had such humble starts: brady was a 6th rounder and Romo was undrafted. Makes one wonder if NFL scouts really know what they are doing.

Tank to Dallas?
By Steven L. Taylor

The FST reports that Tank rolling into town for interview.

That Dallas needs depth at NT is unquestionable, but one has to wonder as to whether signing Tank Johnson is a good idea.

Tirico and Smith to Replace Patrick
By Steven L. Taylor

Mike Tirico will take over the 1-3 ET slot and Steven A. Smith the 3-4 slot. Tirico’s a good choice. Smith is ok, but his shouting gets on my nerves rather quickly.

Weekly Miami Dolphins prediction
By Bill Jempty

Miami(0-1) plays host to Dallas(1-0) this afternoon at 4 p.m. This game doesn’t look hopeful for Dolphin fans. The team’s defense wore out easily last week in a loss to Washington. In addition Safety Yeremiah Bell is out for the season. Miami did sign two new safeties, but with Terrel Owens coming to town, this is no time to either be hurting or testing new personnel.

Dallas scored 45 points last week against the Giants. The Cowboys won’t do as well this week but will still come out on top. My prediction- Dallas 34, Miami 21.

Unless You are a Tide Fan…
By Steven L. Taylor

…you should avoid Alabama sportstalk radio on Monday. If one is an Auburn fan, it will be brutal and if one is devoted to any other program in the nation, it won’t get mentioned anyway.

If Troy’s win against OSU gets even a mention on the Paul Finebaum show, it will be a small miracle.

Maybe if Nebraska beats USC they’ll talk about that, but only then as part of scenario building where in The Messiah Nick Saban can lead the Crimson Tide to a national title this year.

Line of the Day
By Steven L. Taylor

Immediately after the UCF escape, mack Brown was asked what he learned about his Texas team today.

His response:

I know we shouldn’t open up stadiums for anybody else.

Indeed.
