September 12, 2024Dean and the Middle EastThis statement won't come back to haunt him: But he [Dean] also said that "there is a war going on in the Middle East, and members of Hamas are soldiers in that war, and, therefore, it seems to me that they are going to be casualties if they are going to make war." All kidding aside, that statement has some profound implications, especially if he were to become President. Well, it's at least a good thing that he seems okay with terrorists being killed. And, in one sense, since there is a war on terror, there have to be combatants on the other end. But, in many legal and moral senses, terrorists ain't soldiers. Posted by: James Joyner at September 12, 2024 03:26 PMTrue. But that legal/moral issue is rather significant. Posted by: Steven at September 12, 2024 03:34 PMThe terms 'soldier' and 'terrorist' are particularly subjective in the Middle East. And the differences between the two are solely based on perspective. Hey, at least Dean wasn't calling the Taliban the 'equivalent of our Founding Fathers' like Ronald Reagan did. This president has given that away.” - Howard Dean, 2 years after the 9/11 terror attacks. As long as we're talking 'legal/moral' issues here--it seems Donnie Rumsfeld has basically defined 'legal/moral' as 'whatever I feel like.' http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-Rumsfeld-Military-Trials.html?ex=1064237494&ei=1&en=a15387a048a794ae Posted by: JadeGold at September 13, 2024 07:18 AMPost a comment
