Back in November we acquired an HDTV (nothing huge: a 32″ Westinghouse LCD). I have been quite pleased with it. Indeed, I am becoming addicted to watching sports in HD and get annoyed when I can’t. Football in HD rocks. Really, any sport does.
However, for some reason ABC isn’t carrying the Deutsche Bank Championship in true HD, but rather they have up-converted it into quasi-HD. What’s up with that? Sure, it looks better than the analog broadcast, but still.
Further, why can’t my cable company carry Fox Broadcast and ESPN2 in HD? It’s just wrong.
Oh, the whinings of a suburban professional in the early 21st Century…

Welcome to the addicting world of high def! I think the problem with golf is that the number of high def cameras needed would be prohibitively expensive. Instead of a fixed field ala football, you have acres of ground to cover. You have to have mobile cameras. You will definitely see full high def coverage at the U.S. Open and it will probably penetrate more and more.

The thing is that many of the tournaments are in true HD. So now I expect it.

Tough luck on no Fox Dr. I luckily have that one, but no ESPN2. Somebody at my cable company told me that ESPN struck deals with DirectTV and the Dish Network so they are expensive to, and hard on, normal cable companies, hence no ESPN2 HD on most cable boxes.

Interesting. On the one hand, that wouldn’t surprise me. On the other, I wouldn’t put it past the cable folks to make up excuses
But yes, the Fox thing is huge. ;(

[…] And in my ongoing attempt to be known as an HD snob, I would note that the program isn’t even in true HD widescreen-for shame. Filed under: Pop Culture, War on Terror, Sports, The NFL | |Send TrackBack […]
