Via the AP: Author Stan Berenstain Dies at 82

All three of my kids love the Berenstain Bears, and I even had several of their books (although the Bears series per se) when I was little.

Via the BBC comes this story that I meant to post several days ago: Sharon finally decides party name

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has finally decided on a name for his new party, after rejecting National Responsibility and Hatikva (Hope) as possible titles.

The breakaway centrist party has been registered under the name Kadima, the Hebrew word for “forward”.

A good choice, given the goal of the party to position itself as the party of progress and change n the context of the peace processs.

And the party-building appears to be going well:

At least 14 MPs from his former party, Likud, have joined the new faction.

Cabinet minister Haim Ramon – formerly of Labour – became the first senior member of the centre-left party to join forces with Mr Sharon.

And meanwhile, back at Likud, finger-pointing and self-destruction appear to be all the rage:

Correspondents say the Likud candidates have turned on one another in the media after Mr Sharon’s departure from the party.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom has accused Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz and former PM and leadership favourite Binyamin Netanyahu of “tearing Likud to shreds” with their campaigns.

There’s more on the internal rift in Likud in the article.

Via the NYT: Pirro Is Advised Not to Oppose Mrs. Clinton

Jeanine F. Pirro’s bid to unseat Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton suffered an embarrassing setback on Tuesday when the State Legislature’s most powerful Republican said she should call the whole thing off and run for state attorney general instead.

[...]

The news that one of the most powerful Republicans in the state believes that Ms. Pirro is running for the wrong office was just the latest problem to befall her campaign. When she began it in August, a misplaced page in her inaugural speech left her tongue-tied as the cameras rolled and led Democrats to mock her. Then, campaign filings released last month showed that her early fund-raising efforts were anemic.

Quite honestly, the only Republican in NY that I could see besting Mrs. Clinton for that seat is Rudy–and even then it wouldn’t be a slam dunk. So, while this may all be quite embarrassing for Pirro, I suspect that in terms of actually affecting the race in any substantial way, that this really doesn’t mean much.

Via Reuters: Video appears to show 4 hostages

A hitherto unknown Iraqi group issued a video showing four Western hostages it called “spies of occupying forces,” Al Jazeera television reported on Tuesday.

The video from the group “Swords of Truth” showed four men sitting on the ground. Dated November 27, it also showed a British passport in the name of Norman Kember.

The Jawa Report has more (much more) on the individuals who have been taken, and the video.

Via CNN: Huge cocaine bust at Mexican airport

Federal agents searching the cargo hold of a flight from Venezuela on Monday discovered at least 585 kilograms (1,290 pounds) of cocaine tucked inside 13 cardboard boxes — one of the largest cocaine seizures in the history of the Mexican capital’s airport.

Drug dogs led authorities to the discovery aboard Mexicana Airlines Flight 374, which landed at Benito Juarez International Airport from Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, a federal police spokesman said.

[...]

Venezuela serves as a corridor for illegal drugs, mostly cocaine from neighboring Colombia, destined for the United States and Europe. Drug officials in that country estimate that 150 metric tons (165 tons) of cocaine pass through it annually — roughly one-fourth of the cocaine leaving Colombia.

Via the NYT: Case Reopens Abortion Issue for Justices

When the Supreme Court meets on Wednesday to hear its first abortion case in five years, the topic will be familiar: a requirement that doctors notify a pregnant teenager’s parent before performing an abortion.

The court has upheld such laws for years, even in its more liberal days, and nearly all states now have them. But in the current climate, with the court in transition and the abortion debate as raucous as it has ever been, there is no such thing as just another abortion case.

I’m not sure there is ever an abortion case that is just an abortion case. However, there is no doubt that this case will get extra-special coverage.

And there’s another abortion case on the docket…

Via the AP: Canadian Government Falls on No-Confidence

Canada’s three opposition parties, which control a majority in Parliament, voted against Martin’s government, claiming his Liberal Party no longer has the moral authority to lead the nation.

The loss means an election for all 308 seats in the lower House of Commons, likely on Jan. 23. Martin and his Cabinet would continue to govern until then.

Intriguing.
