Via Reuters: “Terminator 3″ director revives Marvel veteran

“Terminator 3″ director Jonathan Mostow will write and direct “Sub-Mariner,” an adaptation of one of Marvel Comics’ oldest superheroes. In the comic, the Sub-Mariner’s real name is Prince Namor, a half-man/half-amphibian from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. An anti-hero, he frequently finds himself helping the human race as much as he fights it when humans pollute the waters.

I can already feel myself being hit over the head with some sort of “message” from this film.

Even if that tactile premonition turns out to be false, I have to ask: the Sub-Mariner?!? As a supporting character he was often interesting and John Byrne’s treatment of him in 1990s comic, Namor was fine (but more because it was Byrne than because of Namor), I’m skeptical that Namor is sufficiently interesting to merit his own movie.

    1. Ok. Superhero movies have officially peaked and begun a decline.

Confirmation will be 2024’s “POWER PACK!” movie, which will probably be a musical, as well.

    2. Why do I think this movie will be less Lee and Kirby, and more “The Man From Atlantis”?

    3. A couple of notes.

First, the fight between Namor and the Hulk in the Defenders was one of the best moments in Marvel history. Namor was a common member of the quirkiest, okay 2nd quirkiest the Champions were the quirkiest, superhero teams ever assembled.

      2) Namor was awesome in the Marvel Supervillain Team-Ups where he continued his battle with Doctor Doom.

      3) The Invaders…need I say more?

      4) Namor is one of the original Silver Age Anti-heroes and Marvel’s first mutant.

      5) Namor was one of the FF’s premiere foes.

      6) The reason he made such a great foe was that his motivations were exactly as described in the bit you clip, he fought against polluters of the sea. Aquaman did too, but in the DC Universe.

I might concede that Namor’s movie might be heavy handed regarding environmentalism, he certainly has the gravitas.

    4. I also can’t believe that Kingdaddy could dis Patrick Duffy so. “Man from Atlantis” was my favorite show as a munchkin.

    5. Kingdaddy: because you are an astute observer of scifi pop culture. And while I, too, watched “Man from Atlantis” as a tot, let me join in the dissin’ thereof.

Christian: you make my point–in all those cases, Namor is a supporting character, not the main character.
