One wonders why, if a student is mathematically eliminated from passing a class, that said student would bother to take the final exam.

    1. Perhaps they plan to take the class again and a sneak at the final may help the next time around. I’m guessing since I would have dropped the class long before failing.

    2. We teach political science. From my limited experience, the students in our classes are not mathematically inclined.

    3. I have that same question sometimes. I’m guessing that a student who is failing the class probably isn’t on the ball enough to plan ahead and remember the final exam for the second time around.

    4. The math-based hypothesis has merit, I suppose. (However in at least one case I straight-up told the student that there was no chance of passing a few weeks back…).

One would like to think it would be the preparing-for-next-time hypothesis. However, for that work you would think that they would also regularly attend class in preparation for the next attempt at climbing said summit.

      No such luck, however.

    5. Maybe he is hoping the prof will grad on the curve, and he will do better than others.

    7. Sadly, the noun needs to be plural.

    9. Yeah, depressingly enough we polisci students are not renowned for our mathematical prowess. 2+2=5? Sure. Fortunately for me, stereotypes have exceptions.

My guess is the student really, really likes you, or maybe shameless grovelling worked for him/her in the past? Or not..

    10. Actually, these were general studies students, not polisci majors.
