Some noteworthy numbers I have encountered in my news perusing today.
- Almost 5,000,000–the staggering number of homeless as a result of the Chinese earthquake. Via the BBC: ‘Five million’ homeless in quake
- 22,069–the confirmed dead from that quake (see link above).
- 78,000–the tragic current death toll from Burma. Via the BBC: Burma death toll jumps to 78,000
- 4.1–the surprising unemployment rate in Texas. Via the DMN: Texas jobless rate ties record low at 4.1 percent in April
- $1.75–the amount that sheriffs in Alabama are alloted, by law, to feed inmates per day. Via the AP: Alabama sheriffs feed inmates on $1.75 a day
- 1927–the year the law above was passed, and has not been altered since.
