Via the BBC we see that the French, too, are discussing immigration legislation: France reviews immigration rules

The French parliament is to discuss whether to approve a new immigration bill which would make it harder for foreigners to work in France.

The proposals, drawn up by French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, demand that newcomers learn the French language and culture.

They also favour highly skilled workers over those who are less qualified.

[...]

The bill would end the automatic right of immigrants’ families to a long-term residence permit after living 10 years in France.

Of course, if you want to see what real immigration problems look like, go no further than France, where integration is difficult and the government actively works to manipulate labor markets.

    1. All the EU is in a debate on immigration policy. Yesterday was the deadline for the richer EU members to declare whether they were going to honor their commitment to allow workers from the newest EU members to work in their territory or to invoke their right to another five years delay of implementing that commitment.

    2. Note, too, that, although France’s rate of immigration and proportion of immigrants is high by French standards, it’s still lower than what the rate of immigration and the proportion of immigrants here has been for our entire history. The wiser heads in Europe are, of course, above learning from the experience of a country that’s dealt with the issue for more than 200 years.

In fairness, European countries have a problem we’ve never had to their degree: the United States does not and never has defined itself ethnically to the degree that most European countries do.
