According to Bill Kristol on Fox New Sunday this morning the Bush administration wants Joe Lieberman to be the US ambassador to the UN, and has allegedly contacted him for the job. If so, I think that would be an excellent move.
(And it may make Matthew Yglesias happy, too).
Not to mention the fact that Lieberman’s replacement in the Senate would be named by a Republican governor.

Lieberman would be an awful choice. How could he work for smoeone who he said “has lost the moral authority to lead an international coalition against terrorism because of his one-sided, unilateral, arrogant foreign policy.”
Of course, I don’t hold Lieberman in very high regard, so it actually wouldn’t be very surprising if he did accept a job from Bush.
Since Bush doesn’t have much regard for the UN it would be only fitting that he put a pathetic clown like Lieberman up there as his ambassador.

Scott - that is my thought as well - so this is silly on its face. It is not going to happen. Lieberman is not going to make the Republican senate majority even stronger.
If this rumor is true, then President Bush is just stroking Lieberman’s ego and looking bipartisan at no cost to himself. In the remote chance Lieberman said yes, gaining another Republican senate seat would be will worth the cost of giving Lieberman the seat (and as Kappiy says, the seat doesn’t mean much - although I would be very, very surprised if Lieberman did accept the job).

I hate to bring it down to a religious level, but I think it would be difficult for someone who is Jewish to be the United State representative to the United Nations. Any chance (not that there is much chance right now) to get some sort of dialouge with the Arab countries would be nearly impossible. The US reputation as being on the side of Israel would be even more cemented int eh Arabs mind.
