Via WaPo, Justice Weighed Firing 1 in 4

The Justice Department considered dismissing many more U.S. attorneys than officials have previously acknowledged, with at least 26 prosecutors suggested for termination between February 2024 and December 2024, according to sources familiar with documents withheld from the public.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales testified last week that the effort was limited to eight U.S. attorneys fired since last June, and other administration officials have said that only a few others were suggested for removal.

In fact, D. Kyle Sampson, then Gonzales’s chief of staff, considered more than two dozen U.S. attorneys for termination, according to lists compiled by him and his colleagues, the sources said.

Without getting into anything else about this latest revelation at the moment, there are three immediate reactions that I have:

1) For a story whose defenders have said is about nothing and is, at its core a simple one, the revelations sure do keep on coming. And along those lines: if the DoJ and the administration have been forthcoming, why do we keep getting new information?

2) One gets the clear impression of a highly dysfunctional Department of Justice from these stories;

and

3) Alberto Gonzales is either one of the most mendacious or one of the most incompetent AG’s we have had in some time (or, both). How many times are we going to find out that something he has told Congress under oath doesn’t, in fact, comport with reality?

      That one is easy: as often as he speaks to Congress under oath.

      By the way, do you happen to know anything further about the deposition of a certain James Comey regarding Alberto Gonzales’ visit to John Ashcroft when he was recovering from surgery? I saw that you commented on this a year and a half ago. Seems to shed plenty more light on what sort of person Gonzales is…

      for example in: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/17/opinion/17thu1.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

      It is an interesting and noteworthy element to the story which I haven’t had time to get to this week, but hopefully will be able to do so soon.
