Two explosions went off Thursday night near a truck carrying former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on her celebratory return to Pakistan after eight years in exile. Police said she was unhurt, but hospital officials and witnesses said dozens of people were killed and more than 150 wounded.
They weren’t small explosions, either. The death tool estimates ranges from 50 to 89, with the likely number being reported as between 50 and 60.
Bhutto was uninjured and police are assuming that it was a suicide attack.
And in regards to historical perspective:
It was the second time Bhutto escaped an assassination attempt. The first attempt was by al-Qaida in 1993. There have been at least three unsuccessful attempts on the lives of Pakistani leaders since 2024.
