Via the Miami Herald: Colombia seeks charges against Chávez
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe announced plans to denounce Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez before the International Criminal Court, where he wants the Venezuelan leader charged with harboring terrorists.
[...]
”Colombia is proposing that the International Criminal Court charge Hugo Chávez, the president of Venezuela, for the support and financing of genocide,” Uribe told journalists after meeting with an ex-congresswoman who was recently freed by the FARC after more than six years as a hostage.
Uribe did not explain what arguments against Chávez would be presented to the Netherlands-based court.
Well, that should calm the waters…
It seems a bit hasty to going to the ICC, and while perhaps a case can be made against Chávez for helping the FARC, charges of genocide seem a bit much, to put it mildly.
I would point out to those who don’t pay much attention to Latin American politics, but this much interstate intrigue is quite the rarity, historically speaking.
Update: The El Tiempo story is here: Por ‘patrocinio de genocidas’, Colombia denunciará a Hugo Chávez ante la Corte Penal Internacional

[...] The rhetoric continues to fly in the Ecuador-Colombia-Venezuela situation. Earlier in the week, Colombia charged the Venezuelans with funding “genocide” 1. Chávez has his own charges: Colombia raid ‘must be condemned’ Mr Chavez, for his part, branded the Colombian raid a “war crime”, adding that Bogota was just a “lackey of United States imperialism”. “We demand condemnation of the Colombian government for this aberrant act,” said Mr Chavez, indicating that he would limit trade and investment with Colombia.
