Public Policy Polling reports: Hoffman leads big
In a three way contest with Democrat Bill Owens and Republican Dede Scozzafava Hoffman leads with 51% to 34% for Owens and 13% for Scozzafava. In a head to head contest with Owens Hoffman holds a 54-38 advantage.
The post notes that “[p]olling the race was a little haphazard in a weekend” which one would expect given that Scozzafava quit, the fact that it was Halloween, and the nature of special elections themselves. Still, given the numbers that we saw prior to this weekend, this is roughly what one would expect: most of Scozzafava’s vote going to Hoffman.
Other interesting tidbits from the poll:
Republican voters also appear to be considerably more energized about the election than Democrats. While Barack Obama won a narrow victory in NY-23 last year, those planning to vote in this race supported John McCain by a 51-43 margin. Obama’s approval rating with likely voters is just 39%.
The full poll is here [PDF]. Here’s the basic info:
Sphere: Related ContentPPP surveyed 1,747 likely NY-23 voters on October 31st and November 1st. The survey’s margin of error is +/-2.3%.

So if Scozzafava really preferred the Democrat over Hoffman, as he claimed, would he not have been more likely to achieve that result by staying in–and quiet?
I suppose there was a LOT of pressure from elsewhere. It will be interesting to see what Scozzafava’s next job is.

Indeed all ’round.
