Via the BBC: Small party abandons Iraq talks

One of the smaller parties in the main Shia alliance in Iraq has said it is withdrawing from negotiations about forming a new cabinet.

Islamic Virtue party spokesman Sabah al-Saadi said the protracted talks on the cabinet were not being conducted in a spirit of national unity.

He said the party would now form an opposition bloc in the parliament.

No numbers are given in the piece, but I don’t think this makes any difference in terms of votes needed to form the cabinet.

And my skepticism of earlier in the week was warranted:

On Tuesday, Iraq’s Prime Minister-designate Nouri Maliki said he had nearly completed the task of forming a new government of national unity. He said that he hoped to announce a new cabinet within two days.

However, there has been little indication of progress.

He said nominations for the key posts in the cabinet had been submitted by Shia, Sunni and Kurdish groups.

They included the defence, interior, oil, finance and foreign ministries.
