Dr. Scott Nokes has an excellent post that explains the problem with the directed readings courses allegedly offered in great volume by one professor at Auburn University, as reported last week by the NYT and commented upon by me here.
I had considered writing a post yesterday on this topic, as based on comments I have received and posts I have read elsewhere, I don’t think everyone understands the issues.
This story is less one about athletics than it is about abuse of position by a faculty member (although that it helped the football program is clear).
At any rate, Nokes does an excellent job of explaining the problem, so I highly recommend his post.
And, despite what folks here in Alabama think, this isn’t some cosmic attempt by the forces of Tuscaloosa who are out to get AU–the proof of which is to be found in the fact that the Tuscaloosa newspaper is owned by the NYT (cue the dramatic music…).
Thanks, Steven. I’ve gotten a lot of links and traffic to that post, but not a single comment as of yet. I wonder what that means?
