Ok, while I could see how the so-called “Playboy” ad could be construed as having racists overtones, I have to say that that flap over the Corker radio ad that supposedly has “jungle drums” played when Ford is mentioned is difficult to take. (My comments on the other ad are to be found here).
For one thing, I am not even sure that one call tell that there are drums being played unless one is told ahead of time, let alone that they are “jungle” drums. Further, while the music is supposedly very dramatically different when Ford and Corker are mentioned, it really isn’t that obvious. If one pays attention to the music it is clear that music in the Ford segments is a tad sinister sounding and the music in the Corker segments more uplifting in tone–but what else would one expect in a political ad?
You can listen here courtesy of
Greg Sargent’s post at the TPMCafe wherein Sargent argues that the drums are, indeed, racist code.
Again, in this case, I’m not buying it and it seems to me like oversensitivity squared (if not cubed).
I agree with you, Steven. You have to really strain at gnats to believe those are “jungle drums” in the background. They just sound like standard audio punch effects to me, and certainly not with a rythym you would associate with jungle drums.

How anyone can still vote republican beggars believe. On Meet The Press Ken Mehlman, chairman of the RNC, tells Americans that there’s nothing he can do to pull the ad, its being run by an independent group. Two days later a spokesman for the RNC explains why they pulled it.
The message is clear- the Republican party has, is and always will lie to stay in power.
Incredible to think that there are people who would correct their children were they to behave in such a manner, and yet will still support such moral bankruptcy in a party.
