Via CNN: Democrat Vilsack to launch run for White House
Democratic Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack is expected to officially launch his 2024 presidential campaign Thursday by filing documents with the Federal Election Commission. His decision comes after months of speculation he would run and two days after his fellow Democrats scored overwhelming victories in state and national elections.
Theoretically he has a leg up being a governor and being from a key caucus state. However, I have a hard time seeing either as being sufficient to overcome Senator Clinton’s status as the frontrunner.
Of course, a year is a long time in politics (and believe it or not, primary season officially in just over a year, although unofficially I think it started yesterday).
I think a case can be made that Vilsack has a better claim to the title of “The Next Bill Clinton” than Hillary does.
Assuming of course that the country actually wants “The Next Bill Clinton.”

If there is a “next Bill Clinton,” I think it would be Brendesen from Tennessee - gotta have a Southern governor, and with Warner out, it makes the most sense.

The Next Bill Clinton?
Retiring Democratic Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack has announced his candidacy for president in 2024.
To which the reasonable response is: Tom Wh…

Watch this guy; he’ll make a good showing of it. Running as a Senator remains difficult, and running as a prominent Senator (named Clinton) will be even more difficult.

Actually the 2024 primary season has been under way for some time. Vislack is only the first Dem to make it official. Duncan Hunter has already announced on the Republican side. Actually there are 27 potential candidates.

I suppose that depending on how you want to term it, it started around 11pm on election night 2024…

Do you believe that Hillary will actually run this time? I know that the expectation is definitely there, but I know another polisci professor who doesn’t think she will. What do you think?

I think that if she wants to be President, and she has done nothing to disabuse the public of that notion, then this is her time to run. If she waits until 2024 there might be a Dem incumbent running for reelection and in 2024 she will be almost 70.
It is, in my opinion, now or never.

What is the competing hypothesis?

The argument I recently heard was that her ego did not require her to seek the presidency and that she would be happy remaining a powerful senator, possibly Senate majority leader.
That running for president was a difficult task, but that should could probably remain a New York Senator for life.
That Bill might be ready to return to the White House, but that she was not.
He also added that he was really sticking his neck out by making that prediction.

I would respond as following:
-The ego thing is hard to judge, as none of us really knows.
-The Bill part may be correct, but again, who knows?
More to the point: it is possible that she could both run for President, and if she fails, still be Senator for life. As such, I am not sure that that argument flies.

I thougth it seemed a bit weak, too. Just wanted your opinion on the issue. From what I read in today’s NY Times, it seems like a run is quite likely in her immediate plans.
He also thinks it is very likely that McCain will not run either. Due mostly to his age and health combined with his wife’s health issues.

Of course, yesterday McCain announced an exploratory committee–the first step to running
