Maureen Dowd in today’s NYT (Cheney, Master of Pain):

More and more the timeline is raising the question of why, if the torture was to prevent terrorist attacks, it seemed to happen mainly during the period when the Bush crowd was looking for what was essentially political information to justify the invasion of Iraq.

Joshua Marshall on Thursday May 14th:

More and more the timeline is raising the question of why, if the torture was to prevent terrorist attacks, it seemed to happen mainly during the period when we were looking for what was essentially political information to justify the invasion of Iraq.

The emphasized bits are the only differences in the two sentences.

That, mis amigos, is plagiarism (as discovered by another Joshua at TPM).

I will be most interested in the Times’ response.

Update: The first stage: denial. Via HuffPo: Maureen Dowd Admits Inadvertently Lifting Line From TPM’s Josh Marshall

Dowd claims that she never read his blog last week but was told the line by a friend of hers. In a follow-up email, she forwarded her desire to apologize to Marshall, writing that had she known, she would have gladly credited Marshall.

A correction will run tomorrow and the column now reads online as follows:

Josh Marshall said in his blog: “More and more the timeline is raising the question of why, if the torture was to prevent terrorist attacks, it seemed to happen mainly during the period when we were looking for what was essentially political information to justify the invasion of Iraq.”

(Side note: why is it that so many newspapers online still haven’t figured out how to include hyperlinks?)

Not much different that what a student might say. The thing is, it is difficult to believe that she heard “the line”: from someone who quoted it near verbatim and that she also remembered it verbatim. If anyone has ever played “telephone” one knows how unlikely this is.
