Via The State: Gov. Sanford not heard from since Thursday - Local / Metro

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, has been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but who declined to be identified.

[...]

Jenny Sanford said she was not concerned.

She said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

Odd, when I need time away from my three kids to write something, I typically go into the office off the bedroom and shut the doors.

This is just weird, but if his wife isn’t concerned, I suppose that I shan’t jump to any conclusions:

One official familiar with the situation said there is no indication that foul play is involved because Sanford occasionally makes trips without his security detail.

The strange (or perhaps irresponsible) thing is that Sanford apparently made no provisions about his absence with the Lt. Gov. Since the indications are that Sanford is not only incommunicado but out of the state (his last known whereabouts based on a cellphone ping was near Atlanta) it strikes me as problematic that no one appears to be formally in charge of the governor’s office.

On a personal note, I cannot imagine being so out of touch with my wife and family for such an extended period of time nor can I imagine my wife finding that acceptable. By the same token, I’m not them. Still, as I said above, this is rather odd–and isn’t the kind of behavior one expects from a sitting governor.

    1. Greg Weeks Says:

Interesting that his need to have time away from his children “to write something” coincided with Father’s Day!

    2. Chris Lawrence Says:

I think there’s a few thousand SC state employees who could be suspects, if it turns out foul play is involved.

      As bizarre as his tan.

    4. Andy Vance Says:

She said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

      Uh oh.

    5. MSS Says:

Hasn’t this guy been mentioned as a future pres/veep candidate? This sort of behavior really is not an asset for any such candidacy.

    6. B. Minich Says:

Along the lines of MSS’s comment . . . how much you wanna bet that this is featured in multiple campaign ads by Sanford’s opposition?

      - Cue Scary campaign ad voice:

“Sanford even LEFT South Carolina, without a trace. Is this what you want from YOUR President?”

    7. SAL Says:

A serious, very good reporter should investigate and find out where Sanford actually went. WYFF 4 is reporting that the SUV was seen in the parking lot of the Atlanta airport, and Sanford was seen in the airport. http://www.wyff4.com/news/19837234/detail.html I do not believe for one minute that this man set a foot on the Appalachian Trail.
