CNN reports: Zelaya returns to Honduras.
Apparently, he is in the Brazilian embassy:
“I have returned so that dialogue can carry on in my own land and in my own city,” he said. “I hope that in the next few hours we’ll be able to communicate with the coup plotters.”“For the moment, thanks to [Brazilian] President [Luiz Inacio] Lula, … we have protection here.”
Wild.
It is unclear how he managed to get where he currently is, save that he started a 15 hour journey from Guatemala and the OAS has confirmed that he is, in fact, at the embassy:
In a written statement, the secretary general of the Organization for American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, confirmed Zelaya’s presence in the embassy and called on “the actors involved in this process” to be calm.He said the de facto government “should make themselves responsible for the security of President Zelaya and of the Brazilian Embassy.”
Developing.

The precedent for deposed Central American leaders hiding out in embassies is not all that good. I’m sure the capital is already being scoured for disco equipment and Lady Gaga CDs by the army.
At least Zelaya is unlikely to end up in a US prison on drug trafficking charges though.

An amusing prospect.

The weirdness continues . . . there’s got to be a comedy that could be made out of this story.
