Via the Montgomery Advertiser: Holmes stands behind Bible-verse quest

Montgomery, declared on the House floor earlier this week that he would give $700 to anyone who could show him a biblical passage stipulating marriage as being between a man and a woman, at least one unidentified person took him up on that dare.

When Holmes arrived for legislative work Thursday, someone had left a Bible for the legislator and had marked some biblical passages regarding the bonds of matrimony.

One of the passages marked is found in the book of Corinthians and speaks of a man and his wife and a woman and her husband. Holmes said the passage still did not prove anything to him.

“Anybody could have any interpretation they want of the Bible,” he said Thursday, “but that’s not my interpretation.”

Holmes is now offering $5,000 to anyone who can show him the biblical passage stipulating marriage as being solely between a man and a woman.

Somehow I don’t think he’ll be writing any checks anytime soon. Good luck to him finding a Biblical verse that actually confers the word marriage on same-sex couples, however.

Note of clarification: Mr. H0lmes is a Representative in the Alabama State Legislature–a Democrat from the Montgomery area. He is known for being a bit outspoken, shall we say (not to mention controversial). Other Alvin Holmes-related blogging can be found here.

    1. I’d give someone $5000 if they could find a manuscript of any biblical book in its original language that even has the English word ‘marriage’, never mind one that defines it.

    2. Please show me some verses that say I can’t shoot heroin, download music off of Kazaa, view pornography on Usenet, and flip off the guy who just cut me off on the way to work.

    3. Mr. Holmes sounds like a very post-modern piece of work.

    5. In my opinion Holmes strange interpretation of God’s word is a disgrace to the people of Alabama and he would be better suited to move to San Francisco where his ungodly thoughts would be appreciated.
