Via Reuters: Iraq lawmaker killed as Bush readies speech
Insurgents assassinated one of the few Sunni Arab politicians in Iraq’s parliament on Tuesday, marking with violence the first anniversary since U.S. occupiers handed sovereignty to Iraqis.[…]
Dhari Ali al-Fayadh, one of just a handful of Sunni members of parliament from the ruling Shi’ite-dominated political alliance, was killed along with his son and three bodyguards by a suicide car bomb that struck his convoy on a road in Baghdad’s northern outskirts.
U.S. and Iraqi leaders say attracting the once dominant Sunni minority into the political mainstream is the key to ending the insurgency, which has become more deadly since the government took office two months ago. Some of insurgents have vowed to kill Sunnis who cooperate with the authorities.
One wonders if this is a killing by al Qaeda, in an attempt to stir up more trouble between the Sunnis and the Shia or if it is the result of Sunni insurgents who wish to block Sunni involvement in the government.
He was a Shia.
