Here’s a video the details the situation in LA at the moment.
Don’t be fooled by pictures of Canal Street and the French Quarter, both locations seem to be atypical in terms of damage.

I think for once the national media may have downplayed a story of destruction. I had the impression as of this morning that things were not nearly so bad.

I think what happened was that a lot of the initial reporting was from the Quarter/near Canal Street, which is where the major hotels are–and, hence, where the media folks are located. That area, while damaged, appears to be better off than much of town.
