Some reactions:
- Steve Dillard is not happy, though has calmed down to some degree and is reserving judgment (sorta, kinda).
- Scott Gosnell is quite displeased (although, like Dillard, does seem to calm down a tad).
- Bryan S. is “underwhelmed”–something which he points out that James Joyner is noting amongst many in the Blogosphere as well.
- Glenn Reynolds is also “underwhelmed.”
- Ann Althouse is taking a wait-and-see approach (or so it seems to me). She has several posts on the subject, including an apt observation (made also on NPR this morning) that cronyism is going to be charged here.
- Joe Gandelman ponders if Bush is moving into a less confrontational style of governing.
Me? I was surprised by the nomination and am reserving judgment at the moment. I really don’t know what to think. Would she have been on my list?–I find that highly unlikely, but, again, I don’t know enough to make a serious, useful assessment.
I don’t see the point, at the moment, or getting one’s shorts in a knot. I like to have more information before reaching dramatic public conclusions.
I’ll add more reactions as I find them.
The fact she was not on anyone’s short list is a concern.

Harriet Miers is one of the nation’s most brilliant legal minds. She has more experience than any other candidate to be appointed to the high court. Even though she has never been a judge, never argued a case before the Supreme Court, it doesn’t matter.
She has what you need to succeed as a judge–unswerving loyalty to Premier Bush. She’ll be great.

I hope this is not a new “let’s all get along” G.W. Bush. And another thought, I am wondering if Katrina has really changed the Presidents governing style, no confrontation. Bush has three more years to either go down as bumbling two termmer or one of this country’s greatest presidents. I just hope that Ms. Miers is not a step in the wrong direction. Just a note that confirmation hearings are going to be interesting, Republicans desperately wanting to know how she leans on certain issues, abortion, environment, ect., and democrats gloating that she gave $250 to Al Gore.

SCOTUS Nominee Announced
Also, Steven Taylor has reactions here and here. He, like me, doesn’t know quite what to think at this point. Frankly, right now, I just think it’s a really weird choice.
