A recent survey of 160 academics by the China Daily, an English-language, government-owned newspaper, found that 60 percent said they had plagiarized some part of their work.[…]
‘’Chinese students virtually learn to plagiarize from their first years in school,” Hereford [an American journalist who teaches journalism at Shantou] said. ‘’Later on, many students are encouraged to plagiarize by professors who want them to get the best possible test scores in this test-happy nation.”
Wild. (Not to mention disgusting).
Perhaps some of my students should consider some study abroad?
Some cultures do not recognize private ownership of physical property. Why can’t Western cultures recognize that intellectual property is concept that does not fit into all cultures? Some cultures believe it is their obligation to build on the culture’s knowledge base. “Intellectual property” is considered community property.
