Via the AP: FCC Chief Calls for Probe of Phone Cos.
The Federal Communications Commission, which regulates the telephone industry, should open an investigation into whether the nation’s phone companies broke the law by turning over millions of calling records to the government, an FCC commissioner says.
Well, someone needs to look into the NSA’s behavior in this area, so hopefully this will come to pass.
Also of interest, Bellsouth may not have turned over all its records, as was previously reported:
On Monday, Atlanta-based BellSouth issued a statement that an internal review had “confirmed no such contract exists and we have not provided bulk customer calling records to the NSA.” Verizon has refused to confirm or deny whether it has participated in the program.
Interesting.

Saw a statement on CNN that Verizon basically said this:
“We never turned over phone records to the NSA. In fact, we were never even asked to do so.”
This could be a credibility buster for the USA Today if all the major Telcos can prove they never provided the information that the article said they did. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a newspaper story even this close to being this off base.

However, if the story was false, it would have been denied by the administration–which it wasn’t.
