Via the Austin American-Statesman: Buoyed by 2024 Rose Bowl victory, Texas pulls in a top-ranked class

Texas’ class was a consensus top five nationally, with Scout.com ranking it third; College Sports TV putting it fourth; and Rivals.com having it fifth. It was tossup between Florida and Southern California for the nation’s top class.

The Texas group was chock full of football bluebloods, befitting a team that’s a month removed from winning the national championship. Topped off by No. 1 Sergio Kindle, 15 made the American-Statesman’s Fabulous 55, a list of the state’s top prospects, including six of the top 11.

Five were members of the Parade magazine All-America team. Kindle was considered the top linebacker in the country, while Kilgore’s Eddie Jones was the consensus pick as the nation’s best defensive end.

Sounds good to me.

Via the Sports Network: The Sports Network - I-A College Football

USC junior running back LenDale White declared his eligibility for the 2024 National Football League Draft on Wednesday, foregoing his final collegiate season.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound tailback finished the 2024 season with 1,302 rushing yards on 197 carries (6.6 avg.) for 24 touchdowns and 14 receptions for 219 yards (15.6 avg.) and two touchdowns.

He put in quite a performance in the Rose Bowl, and after that I figured he would come out. There is little doubt that he will go in the first round.

As expected (via the Austin American-Statesman): Young heading to NFL

Vince Young announced Sunday that he is skipping his senior season as quarterback for the national champion Texas Longhorns and will enter the NFL draft.

“I’ve decided to enter the draft this year and go to the NFL,” Young said in a news conference on the University of Texas campus. “I know that everybody is behind me, and I thank God for that. I won’t let ya’ll down.”

The reward is to high (I can’t imagine he would go any lower than third overall) and the risk of a career-ending injury is too high not to go.

As much as I would love to see him stay at Texas and repeat (something that I think a Young-led Longhorns squad would be favored to do), this is obviously the best move for him.

Things went fine on the panel this morning–perhaps more on that later,

But for now, I have to say: Hook’Em Horns!

That was quite a game last night, and quite a performance by Vince Young.

Via the AP: Nebraska Back on the Map After Alamo Win.

A few reactions:

1) How far did Michigan fall this year?

2) Good for the Big XII, which needs some serious improvement, especially in the North.

The question of where Tim Tebow, a HS QB from Florida was going to go to school has been the topic of local sports radio since the regular season ended (and hence why I haven’t listened to much local sporttalk of late).

Now, we find, he’s going to Florida (which should make the Chair of my Department happy):
Tebow opts to stay home and play for Florida
.

One guesses that the sackfest that Auburn put on Brody Croyle didn’t help persuade Tebow to go to Bama (and I think he was at that game). Plus, it appears he has a better chance to start sooner at Florida.

Tebow is the second-rated QB on this list of the Top 100 players as ranked by Tom Lemming of CSTV.

Of course, all I care about is that it looks likes Texas has a nice share of the list).

Or is the Heisman ceremony boring and, well, lame?

Well, this game was over back in the first half and it went into to “let’s just get it over mode” in the third quarter with Texas up 70-3.

At this point it’s like the fourth quarter in an NFL preseason game.

So, it is cleary on to Pasadena and almost certainly the Trojans.

Hook’Em!
